THE STORY

The diagram records the traces of a danced love song. Love Song is a choreography by Andrey Kaydanovskiy, the sought-after neoclassical ballet dancer and choreographer of the Vienna State Opera, which he presented at Junge Choreografen 2014, organised by the Ballet Club of the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper, at the Odeon in Vienna.

The work shows a captured fragment of the choreography, in which Kaydanovskiy dances a one-minute excerpt of Love Song as a solo in Casanova Sorolla's former studio on Kohlmarkt in Vienna. One minute danced on the edge of tipping over, a fall into the picture and a stretching of the frame, during a voluntary night shift.

Taking part in competitions or developing their own choreographic work demands a great deal of initially unpaid commitment from dancers and choreographers. The sparse set in the studio at night speaks of this reality, as does the expressiveness that breaks through now and then, writing itself under the skin of the paper as a gesture of urgency.

The choreography was then re-enacted on the summer stage of the MuseumsQuartier: the same dancer, the same choreography, and once again Casanova Sorolla turned it into an artwork through his particular pigment process.

ORIGINALTEXT (DEUTSCH) +

Luis Casanova Sorolla is a multimedia artist born in Lima, Peru, in 1984. He lives and works between Vienna, Austria, and Bahia, Brazil.

He moved to Vienna in 2000, joined the University of Fine Arts Vienna in 2001 and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2012.

His practice is defined by transformative processes. He works with dancers, musicians and choreographers, and his two-dimensional works record performances staged beforehand: movement is translated into diagrams on large sheets of paper, made with natural pigments through his own pigment process. The sources are notations and traditions passed between folk and classical culture, from ballet to vernacular music and dance.

His work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Austria, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Slovenia, Brazil and the United States, most recently at Arte Spazio Tempo in Venice (2026), and in group exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Zona Maco in Mexico and Alserkal in Dubai. He has been artist in residence at the John Chamberlain State in New York, Hugo França Gallery in Trancoso and Villa Müller in Feldkirch.
